This page is reserved for the writings of the women we have served over the years. To begin with, the following words represent the collective wisdom of the Spring '99 support group on the subject of Preventing Violence in Relationships.

UNDERSTAND WHO THEY ARE

Watch for Negative Behaviour Such As:

  • manipulative behaviour
  • disrespect toward women
  • handles stress poorly
  • does not compromise in ideas and perceptions
  • monopolizes your time and activities
  • orders you around - doesn't ask
  • inappropriate authoritative behaviour
  • bad manners
  • disrespects your family and / or his own family
  • drives dangerously
  • disrespectful to your feelings and ideas - invalidates you
  • takes unnecessary risks
  • takes on role in your family without talking it over with you, i.e., assumes the father role to your children
  • has a sadistic sense of humour
  • humiliates you in public and / or in private

REMEMBER THAT YOUR EMOTIONAL WELL BEING IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!

INCREASE INDIVIDUAL AWARENESS

Watch for Triggers Such As:

  • defensiveness
  • anger
  • jealousy
  • aggressiveness
  • alcohol and / or drug abuse
  • unhealthy competitiveness
  • insecurities
  • secretiveness
  • bad mouthing other people
  • unable to show or define emotions
  • low self-esteem
  • self-destructive behaviours
  • emotional instability

BE AWARE AND LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS!!!

INCREASE SELF-AWARENESS

Know Yourself, As in Know:

  • your strengths and abilities
  • your weaknesses
  • your self-esteem
  • your history - childhood survival skills
  • your mental health - cultivate and learn how to listen to your instincts
  • your triggers - good and bad
  • your values, ethics and morals
  • your importance to yourself and to the people around you
  • your comfort level - learn how to say 'no' and to go at your own pace
  • your expectations of yourself and others
  • your limits
  • your communication style

ALWAYS BE TRUTHFUL WITH YOURSELF!!!

UNDERSTAND WHO YOU ARE

Work Through Childhood Issues:

  • recognize childhood tapes
  • know family of origin's health history - mental, physical and spiritual
  • be aware of history or drug / alcohol use
  • recognize abusive behaviours - styles of consequences
  • understand your family structure and your role in the family
  • understand the dynamics of the family
  • know family secrets and unspoken rules
  • know your survival behaviours - survival skills learned in childhood
  • know the role extended family and friends played in your life
  • know parents' history
  • know family standards, morals and values
  • recognize forms of discipline, for example, abuse as opposed to fair discipline

KNOW WHERE YOU CAME FROM SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU ARE GOING!!!
